Biden Allies Pelosi and Clooney Express Concerns About His Re-election Prospects

WASHINGTON/DALLAS - U.S. President Joe Biden is grappling with fresh uncertainties about his reelection bid following critical remarks from influential Democratic figures Nancy Pelosi and George Clooney, highlighting divisions within the party as the 2024 election looms.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a staunch Biden ally, hinted at doubts regarding his candidacy during a recent MSNBC interview. She urged Democratic colleagues to withhold public judgment as Biden hosts NATO leaders in Washington, emphasizing the need for unity and patience within the party ranks.

"I've said to everyone: let's just hold off. Whatever you're thinking, either tell somebody privately, but you don't have to put that out on the table until we see how we go this week," Pelosi stated, following Biden's strong remarks at the NATO summit.

Pelosi stopped short of a definitive endorsement, stating, "I want him to do whatever he decides to do," underscoring the delicate balance of supporting Biden while addressing internal party concerns.

In a separate development, Hollywood actor and Democratic supporter George Clooney expressed reservations about Biden's current performance compared to previous years. In an opinion piece published in The New York Times, Clooney lamented Biden's recent debate performance and suggested that Biden might not be the same charismatic figure who clinched the presidency in 2020.

"It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate," Clooney wrote, highlighting concerns among some Democrats about Biden's ability to secure a second term.

Despite these concerns, Biden's campaign has remained steadfast in its commitment to the reelection bid. Campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon and senior advisors Mike Donilon and Steve Ricchetti are scheduled to brief Senate Democrats, reaffirming Biden's determination to contest the upcoming election.

Vice President Kamala Harris, a prominent figure within the Democratic Party and a potential successor if Biden were to step aside, addressed a crowd of approximately 19,000 at an event hosted by the historically Black Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in Dallas. Harris underscored the election's significance, describing it as the most "existential" and consequential of their lifetimes, rallying support amidst growing party uncertainties.

The internal divisions within the Democratic Party reflect broader concerns over Biden's ability to unify the party and effectively campaign against Republican incumbent Donald Trump, who remains a formidable opponent.

As Biden seeks to consolidate support among key constituencies, including labor unions and minority voters, the upcoming months will prove pivotal in shaping the Democratic strategy for the 2024 election.
